Q Awards Nominations

The nominations for the Q Awards have been announced and are a mixed bunch. Being the opinionated so-’n'-so that I am, here’s the list in full with a few comments of my own:

Best New Act
Sponsored by Myspace.com
(Last year: Corinne Bailey Rae)

The Enemy
Klaxons
Cherry Ghost
The Pigeon Detectives
The View

Easy choice: The Pigeon Detectives by a mile. Having said that, I suspect they won’t win it. Cherry Ghost winning would perhaps be justified, but we might just end up with another award for the Klaxons

Best Track
Sponsored by Sony Ericsson
(Last year: Gnarls Barkley – Crazy)

Manic Street Preachers - Your Love Alone Is Not Enough
Kaiser Chiefs - Ruby
Hard-Fi - Suburban Knights
Athlete - Hurricane
Muse - Knights Of Cydonia

Although Knights of Cydonia is awesome live, out of the nominations I’d go with Ruby. Shame that the new Foo Fighters single isn’t listed here, nor Heinrich Manoeuvre by Interpol.

Best Breakthrough Artist
Sponsored by Ben Sherman

Kate Nash
Mika
Jack Penate
Jamie T
Calvin Harris

Haven’t got a clue. Mika’s music is, in my opinion, hideous, but he’ll probably win. I’m told that Jack Penate is good though.

Best Video
Sponsored by 02
(Last year: The Killers – When You Were Young)

Lily Allen - Alfie
The White Stripes - Icky Thump
Kaiser Chiefs - Ruby
Bjork - Earth Intruders
The Killers - Bones

None of the above. Australia by the Shins should be listed here and should then go on to win. Admittedly, I would say that..!

Best Live Act
Sponsored by Marshall Amplification
(Last year: Muse)

Arcade Fire
Muse
The Killers
Arctic Monkeys
Kasabian

Muse again. Saw them in Ireland this year and they were spectacular.

Best Album
(Last year: Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not)

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
Kaiser Chiefs - Yours Truly, Angry Mob
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Manic Street Preachers - Send Away The Tigers

Lots of bands which should be here that aren’t. Maximo Park, Editors, Interpol etc. Of those listed, probably Arcade Fire or Kaiser Chiefs.

Best Act In The World Today
(Last year: Oasis)

The Killers
Arctic Monkeys
Foo Fighters
Muse
U2

Muse or Foo Fighters, probably the former. And to be fair either would be justified.
