Last.fm Playlist #1

Since I have barely anything to do, I’ve updated my Last.fm playlist, which you can listen to on the sidebar (it lets you hear full length tracks on shuffle). I thought I’d probably better write a little about the playlist and make my excuses/give my reasons. This is a long post, but if people want more changing playlists let me know in the comments.

  1. Pela - Latitudes. I haven’t heard much of their stuff, but it’s pretty good. Slightly U2-ish I suppose, but with a weirder voice.
  2. The Cinematics - Keep Forgetting. I first came across the Cinematics as a supporting act for the Howling Bells, which was unfortunate as they completely out-did the Howling Bells that night. Slightly Editors-ish stuff and most of their songs sound a bit formulaic, but good stuff nevertheless.
  3. Maximo Park - The Unshockable. It’s Maximo, so there’s not much to say about them. They’re manic and awesome. This is one of their songs which is hard to place as to whether it’s happy or dark, but its damned good.
  4. Nada Surf - Paper Boats. Really relaxed long song from Nada Surf, but up to scratch and just as good as their more well known stuff.
  5. The Pigeon Detectives - Romantic Type. Sadly Last.fm doesn’t have Stop or Go, which I wanted to put on this playlist. Maybe some other time. They are hard to place - sort of Strokes-esque, but better.
  6. Editors - An End Has A Start. I was surprised that this was listed as the album hasn’t been released yet, and even more surprised that it has had more plays than Blood. Someone leaked methinks. Either way, the usual Editors stuff and very good.
  7. The Bravery - Unconditional. A classic. New album out on the 25th (at the same time as Editors). Hope it’s as good as the last one.
  8. Beck - Black Tambourine. I’ll admit, this is an odd one, but really catchy.
  9. Voxtrot - Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives. This was released on an EP but really should have been a single from their new album. Great music with vocals similar to Ash. If you listen to just one song on the playlist, listen to this one.
  10. Fields - Charming the Flames. I once described Fields as “Like Moby, but more electronica and indie with a shedload of guitars and synths” to which the accurate response was “So not like Moby at all then”. Fair point. Electronica, indie and folk simultaneously, but surprisingly effective.
  11. The Decemberists - 16 Military Wives. Much lighter stuff and sounds jovial, although the lyrics are clearly quite anti-war and miserable. Unusual vocals as well, but it works.
  12. Bloc Party - Waiting for the 7:18. Not much stands out on the new Bloc Party album, and this one feels a bit sensationalist, but isn’t too bad.
  13. Interpol - Slow Hands. An absolute classic, and probably their best so far (new album in a few weeks though). Awesome guitars and great vocals.
  14. Kasabian - Stuntman. Not one of Kasabian’s most well-known songs, but fairly typical Kasabian stuff and worth a listen.
  15. Zero 7 - Crosses. Almost relaxed from Zero 7, but much faster than most of their songs. A bit like End Theme in that it sounds quite upbeat, but with more of their electronica stuff.

I realize I’ve included quite a lot of stuff described as “electronica” in there, but it doesn’t sound like your average electronica and leans more towards the indie side of things.

Anyway, there are the excuses. I’d like to update the playlist some other time, but the current one will stay there for at least a week (probably longer - I’m lazy). I should probably apologize profusely to Sarah for unashamedly stealing the idea of a changing Last.fm playlist from her site. Sorry!

I’ll probably run out of music before too long, but let me know in the comments if people want more of this sort of thing (the changing playlists, not the enormously long posts).
