Just a quick note about the direction of blogging on cunningtitle. LawPath should be launched in October (with a lot of luck) and cunningtitle will be undergoing a redesign too. I’m also going to try and concentrate posts a bit more on law points and in particular student-ish stuff, which means fewer tech-related posts. Hopefully this will make the site a little more focused.
That’s the plan anyway.

I’m having problems seeing the main site banner for cunningtitle in Firefox. Is anyone else having difficulties? Safari seems to be fine, but the Firefox 3 beta seems to be getting stroppy about it.

Comments are heavily encouraged for this post.

3 reasons:
- Law students are thrown into their first year of a completely new subject, and then in the following year are expected to return and start applying to law firms for vacation placements. This is tough.
- There’s no proper place to collectively panic about this, and there’s no place to collect all the legal happenings in the UK in a proper manner.
- Rob needs a new web project.
This is entirely concept at the moment, but you get the gist of it. Ideas in the comments or on the new temporary blog. What I need to know is, what exactly do people want from this sort of website? I don’t mean just law students either: what would any student want from this sort of site?
Note that LawPath is a temporary name while I try and think of something better.
The current format will be a website with logins and accounts. It will start as a news website, similar to Newsvine but less complex and with the stories divided into their appropriate legal sections. This will then expand to talk of vacation placements and training contracts, before moving on to the law course (LLB or BA) itself.
Let me know what you think!
N.B. If you like the idea of this project and have a website, please feel free to mention it on your site. The more comments and feedback I can get the better! Thanks!

Just upgraded the site to WordPress 2.3.1 without much trouble, although Fantastico is phenomenally slow to get the latest update and I had to fix the sidebar icons for categories.
WordPress 2.3.1 includes support for tags. I have no idea what this means or what difference it makes. Anyone care to enlighten me?
[UPDATE] Good news: the update also fixes the old bug with the bar at the top, where if you were logged-in you still had to click the login link to get it to display your username correctly. That’s all fixed now.

Having been pretty reliable so far (save for a short delay in getting my account set-up and the phenomenally slow Fantastico service), Midphase hosting have started to have problems.
Midphase is the parent company of my host ANHosting. Several of their servers have been having problems lately, with a DDoS attack on ans04 and serious problems with ans02, which has cunningtitle on it.
I’m assuming they resorted to a back-up, because now half my posts are missing. Oh well - not sure there was anything critical in there.
For those of you wondering about DDoS, I can’t be bothered to explain, so I’ll just leave you with this:

I know it won’t make much difference as I post so rarely, but just a note to say that I won’t be around on the internets [sic] for a few days while we wait to get broadband in the new house.

Yep, TaskStep 1.0 finally approaches, although I’ll admit that very little has changed from the alpha. Originally I thought there was an enormous gaping security hole (MySQL injections) but it turns out the only access a hacker would have is the login form, which is already encrypted before it is passed through the database and so does not need addslashes() run on it as well.
I’m going to leave the next week to bug hunting and last minute changes before releasing it as a final 1.0 version.
Suggestions for any changes and bugs are very welcome either in the comments or the forums.

I’ve just activated the cunningtitle theme for the forums, so everything should be looking better now. There are still some finer points of integration that I’d like to do at some stage. First off is activating the WordPress functions in bbPress so that the profile pages can also list the number of comments made on the blog, but it’s a bit tricky when the WordPress stuff is in the parent folder. I’ll have a go at it at some stage, but for the time being it’s all done.

The forums are open again (and pretty seriously condensed as well - there is a reason for that). This time we’re running on bbPress, which has better akismet protection and really good WordPress integration. In short, if you sign-up for either the blog or the forums, your account will span both so you can have an easier time commenting.
Sadly, writing themes for WordPress is a lot easier than writing them for bbPress, so it will take a few days before it looks anything like the main blog. But hey, the content’s there.
Also, the TaskStep page has finally moved to its (temporary) home here. Anyone who’s linked to it, please update things!
I’ll admit, this site is a little thin on the content side at the moment.

Welcome to cunningtitle.com! It took a while, but it’s finally up and running. Sort of. There’s a lot of admin to do. Firstly there’s the forums. I’m moving over to bbPress as it has better Akismet support and can integrate with the blog nicely. There’s also the TaskStep stuff (and yes, I know the beta is due - it’s all a bit hectic and there’s lots to do) which needs to be moved to a page somewhere on this site. I suspect I’ll move the current page here and then redesign it, or just use a WordPress page.
The top banner is the Trent building in Nottingham University. That will probably change before too long, and I might start trying to change it on a regular basis. There’s lots to add to the sidebar as well, such as last.fm stuff.
One final note. You’ve probably noticed at the top there is a login bar. You may now register on cunningtitle which will make commenting a little easier. Once this is integrated with the forums, those who have registered for the forums can use their accounts on the blog and vice versa. Apologies for the captcha - it’s the only way to keep spam bots out!
