Mac Sync Stuff

Something really cool I just worked out I can do with a Mac.

  • I can use iCal to subscribe to Google Calendar
  • I can use iCal to synchronise with OmniFocus
  • I can sync iCal with my iPod so I have both my to-do lists and agenda on my iPod, which travels everywhere with me on campus

At last! A digital to-do list that I keep with me!

Thanks for Scaring Me PayPal Plug-In

PayPal seem to have expanded their secure cards scheme (whereby you can get a single-use Mastercard number to use which links to your PayPal account) to the UK.

Great news… or it would be if the required plug-in actually worked. Not only are both the plug-in and the website both refusing to create either of these for me, but the plug-in just scared the hell out of me by claiming that the main PayPal website was a fraud and I’d just given some fraudster the password and e-mail address necessary to use my bank account.

One changed password and two changed security questions later and I checked the address. The plug-in didn’t complain a second time, and it was the legitimate main PayPal site.

So thanks guys, but would you mind, y’know, actually getting it to work..?

[UPDATE] What a surprise! PayPal still haven’t got back to me, and as far as I can tell from reading around a bit, even though the secure cards appear to be made available to users outside the US, it is actually only Americans that can use them. Once again, PayPal has ignored the UK. Cheers folks.

The Cult of Mac

Decision taken: I don’t even want to try Vista, my laptop is dying quickly and Ubuntu doesn’t seem to work properly these days.

I’m getting a Mac.

BBC NEWS | Politics | Brown hits back on forces funding

BBC NEWS | Politics | Brown hits back on forces funding

Personal opinion: this is a major tactical error by Brown. Aside from the clear desperation of blaming the opposition (again), by wading in himself Brown has extended this news story and made it more important.

Services have been criticising the government for years for lack of equipment and funding, rightly or wrongly. If you want to handle this politically, as Prime Minister the last thing you do is comment yourself. What was Brown thinking?

Amnesty International Video

Amnesty International have created a series of videos for their “unsubscribe” campaign on torture techniques. The first one is entitled “Waiting for the Guards” and is incredibly effective. Some might find the video quite upsetting, but it is definitely worth a watch.

The film was made with a performance artist who stood in the stress position for 6 hours, so the pain is actually real. Even in a controlled, voluntary environment, it gets the message across.

LawPath

Comments are heavily encouraged for this post.

lawpathannounce2.png

3 reasons:

  1. Law students are thrown into their first year of a completely new subject, and then in the following year are expected to return and start applying to law firms for vacation placements. This is tough.
  2. There’s no proper place to collectively panic about this, and there’s no place to collect all the legal happenings in the UK in a proper manner.
  3. Rob needs a new web project.

This is entirely concept at the moment, but you get the gist of it. Ideas in the comments or on the new temporary blog. What I need to know is, what exactly do people want from this sort of website? I don’t mean just law students either: what would any student want from this sort of site?

Note that LawPath is a temporary name while I try and think of something better.

The current format will be a website with logins and accounts. It will start as a news website, similar to Newsvine but less complex and with the stories divided into their appropriate legal sections. This will then expand to talk of vacation placements and training contracts, before moving on to the law course (LLB or BA) itself.

Let me know what you think!

N.B. If you like the idea of this project and have a website, please feel free to mention it on your site. The more comments and feedback I can get the better! Thanks!
