Shameless Self-Promotion
Quick bit of shameless self-promotion (something not really justified given the lack of posts recently).
I’ll be chairing the discussions on URN, the Nottingham student radio station), in the programme “The Big Picture”, which goes out live at 4pm on Saturday. You can listen in at http://www.urn1350.net

It’s Not About the Money
You can’t really blame the British population for having money on the brain. After all, it is a recession. But the transition from blaming bankers for rising prices and the plummeting value of the pound to scrutinizing the expense claims of politicians has seemed an easy change of subject for the media.

Perfecting the Playlist
The point of this post isn’t really to say “this is how it’s done”, but rather ask for contributions.
The perfect playlist is, of course, unachievable, but as I’m slowly discovering there is something of an art to it.
It’s an art that I never really gave a lot of thought to, but one taken quite seriously by some (see High Fidelity). Then I had a go at a Top 5 Songs List, and came up with the following:
- Heinrich Maneuver – Interpol
- I Will Possess Your Heart – Death Cab for Cutie
- New Slang – The Shins
- Gimme Shelter – The Rolling Stones
- Bittersweet Symphony – The Verve
The rules were following the High Fidelity format: “kick it off with a killer. Then, you’ve gotta take it up a notch”. On top of that, the list was supposed to be an almost-top-five list, so that it contained a few songs that would definitely go in my all time top five (2, 3 and 5) and others that were really good, but filled the gaps nicely.
That was the idea anyway.
The question is, what rules do you have for making a playlist? Here’s one to start with:
- Don’t include two songs by the same artist unless they are very different, and never put two tracks by the same artist next to each other
Any others?

New Theme!
Ta-dah!
New theme is finally working, with comments! It’s a bit simplified, but should do the job.

Dude, where’s my blog?
It’s probably been about three months since I removed the old theme and replaced it with this, ahem, “temporary” one – one which currently lacks a comment form.
Not exactly a swift change, I admit. The problem is it’s very easy to get swept-up in new web projects, and to be fair some show a lot of promise (sadly not the nine-months-in-the-making LawPath so far).
For the time being however, there’s not a vast amount I can do. Since there are other projects in the works I’ll link to them as and when they are launched. Once I get a bit of time, I might replace this template with a proper one, but until then I’m afraid this is what we’re stuck with.
At least it’s original…

First impressions of an iPod Touch
I couldn’t help it. I’d spent some considerable time convincing myself that an iPhone was too expensive to be justified (on two occasions). But then a friend said he’d bought an iPod touch.

Revision with the Printable CEO Series
Tracking the time spent on something has often been proposed as a good method of tackling procrastination. The Printable CEO series by David Seah is a pretty good start, and works well if you’re trying to get on with some serious revision, particularly his Emergent Task Timer. To pinch his summary:
The Emergent Task Timer is task tracking flipped around; use the form to find out what you’re doing, and take corrective action. If you need a little extra push to get working on the things you should be doing, try this form with an egg timer to set the pace. Grad students: this one is for you
In short, it’s just a form for tracking what you spend time on, split-up into 15 minute chunks. Having used it for my own revision, I can say it’s very effective. Make sure to schedule breaks though — small doses of effective work are much better than lots of staring at the page!

A Ten Minute Guide to the Economic Crisis
This post is designed to be a quick primer for anyone wanting to know a bit more about the economic crisis and what the pundits on television are talking about. It is substantially based on Robert Peston’s programme “Super Rich: The Greed Game” originally broadcast on 7 October 2008 on BBC Four, as well as my own research. I am anything but an expert in this subject, so apologies for any inaccuracies. (more…)

LawPath: Approaching Launch

The date is set: LawPath is due to launch on Monday, October 27th. The poster is up in the Law and Social Sciences building, and the new preview site is up (albeit currently minus the site tour, which will be up in the next week).
The launch process is an interesting and fun one. I’ve tried, although with fairly limited success, to go for the “Hollywood Launch” advocated in the 37signals book Getting Real, a fantastic read for anyone looking to have a go at creating any website.
The general idea is to start with a teaser site, then a preview site, then launch the site. From a designer’s point of view, this means you get to design three sites in one, which makes things a bit interesting, but gets you thinking. From the point of view of getting users to the site, the hope is that it gradually drums-up support.
